Whiz Kidz
Whiz Kidz is a tutoring program for needy elementary children in Des Moines’ inner city. Activities include group devotion time and a meal followed by quiet time where tutors work with the students on reading and homework. Children in Whiz Kidz enjoy the personal attention and love of their tutor and develop a bond, which often translates into increased reading and academic skills. Tutors are encouraged to communicate with each child’s teacher to focus on areas needing attention and discuss progress.
Currently, our tutoring session is held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. During the summer, Sonshine Kidz will be held during the weekday afternoons. Please call or email Melanie Wise, program coordinator, at 515-282-4822 or mwise@freedomforyouth.org for more details.
Guidelines:
- All tutors will be required to complete an application, criminal background checks, including driving records, and provide two references.
- Children are identified primarily through school teachers and counselors, focusing on those children who lack parental support and are falling behind in school.
- Parents/guardians understand that Whiz Kidz Tutoring is a program of Freedom for Youth Ministries and is in no way affiliated with the public school system.
- Tutoring will take place during the school year and tutoring sessions will not be held on days that school is not open (holidays, Spring break, snow days).
- Tutors and students can start anytime during the school year, and will be encouraged to continue the following school year.
